the Gerda Henkel Foundation has established a new funding initiative for democracy, which is divided into two subsections with different perspectives:
– historically oriented subsection on the topic of Democracy as a Utopia, Experience and Threats aims at placing the aforementioned problematic issues in the broader historical context and considering the history of conflicts over the foundation of the social order.
– The second subsection, which is oriented towards analysis of the present situation and predictions for the future, focuses on Transformations of Democracy? Or: The Contours of Future Democratic Society.

the preservation and further development of the legacy of the traditional arts subjects is a prime goal of the „History, Language and Culture“ area of support. In spite of all the new combinations, the traditional fields such as philosophy and theology remain important; these too are undergoing a process of change, but at the same time continue to offer orientations which can be of use in all fields of the arts and cultural studies.
The foundation attempts to respond to these manifold changes with a considerable degree of open-mindedness. On the one hand projects are supported which, under the influence of Anglo-Saxon research, could be called „cultural studies“ and which seek to establish interdisciplinary contact with the social sciences. Special attention is also paid to research projects which are based on cooperation with the natural sciences, particularly with the cognitive neuro-sciences. At the same time the foundation continues to support the research traditions of the „classical“ arts disciplines, particularly philosophy and theology; it furthers research which can act as a stimulus to all subjects in the broad fields of the arts and cultural studies.

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation supports work in the social and natural sciences and aligned disciplines to increase understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence in the contemporary world. Priority is given to work that addresses urgent, present-day problems of violence—what produces it, how it operates, and what prevents or reduces it.

DMR invests in the discovery, prediction, and design of new materials and the explanation of materials phenomena, as well as in the development of the next generation of materials scientists, which includes increasing the pathways for participation by underrepresented minorities. DMR supports fundamental experimental and theoretical materials research and education via programs focused on condensed matter physics, solid-state and materials chemistry, and the science of materials that are ceramic, metallic, polymeric, nanostructured, biological, electronic, photonic, and multifunctional.

The purpose of this solicitation is to support the development of transformative high-risk, high-reward advances in computer and information science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, behavioral and/or cognitive research to address pressing questions in the biomedical and public health communities. Transformations hinge on scientific and engineering innovations by interdisciplinary teams that develop novel methods to intuitively and intelligently collect, sense, connect, analyze and interpret data from individuals, devices and systems to enable discovery and optimize health. Solutions to these complex biomedical or public health problems demand the formation of interdisciplinary teams that are ready to address these issues, while advancing fundamental science and engineering.

The Minor Foundation for Major Challenges (MFMC) is a Norwegian foundation that supports communication projects which advance the transition to a low carbon economy. 
MFMC supports projects that support urgent, large-scale transformation, with a focus on changing policies and practices in public or private institutions. The foundation’s priorities for the 2019-2023 period are to
– encourage and support innovation in climate communication
– increase the number of voices and narratives in climate advocacy
– help strengthen social and political movements that open up for radical change
